Hitchcock E. 1857 ILLUSTRATIONS OF SURFACE GEOLOGY with 164 pp., and 12 plates. Contained
in Smithsonian Contributions to Knowledge, Volume 9, entire volume presented here. The the
volume has overall light+ exterior wear, ex-library but the only markings are the small spine
label and period bookplate on front paste down, the front free end paper has a light crease
else the contents are clean and very good. Hitchcock’s last substantial contribution to the
physical geology of the Connecticut River Valley (his Ichnology, on fossil dinosaur and other
reptile footprints was to follow a year later), noted for its maps and figures, and rather scarce.
This work focuses on later Tertiary and glacial geology, as mostly deduced from the distribution
of morianes and other glacial features as they were known at the time, and painstakenly detailed
maps based on elevation data of river terraces along the Connecticut and its tributaries, as well
as adjacent regions as the Berkshires are approached. Also included in the volume are several other
reports which are: Mayer B. 1857 OBSERVATIONS ON MEXICAN HISTORY AND ARCHEOLOGY, WITH A SPECIAL
NOTICE OP ZAPOTEC REMAINS AS DELINEATED IN MR. J. G. SAWKIN'S DRAWINGS OF MITLA, ETC
